Student will present at the national conference of the History of Science Society

Kavya R will be a featured presenter at a special workshop
held during the national conference of the History of
Science Society. This year the conference is in Cleveland
in ear ly November. Kavya developed a website on
Galileo and his theories for last year’s National History
Day competition. As part of her research, she contacted
four of the most respected scholars in the country on the
history of astronomy. After seeing her completed website,
they were very impressed by the quality of research and
wanted to highlight the collaboration between university
scholars and a middle school student. The Society is
very interested in the potential for the session to inspire
more historians of science to be involved in both NHD
projects and incorporating the history of science into
pre-collegiate education. Her website and interviews can
In addition to her interviews, Kavya also visited the
Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology
in Washington D.C. At this Smithsonian library, Kavya was
able to look at original 17th century manuscripts pertaining
to her topic. The head librarian of Special Collections

Dhweeja D was a semifinalist in the 2011 Broadcom MASTERS™, a program of Society for Science & the Public. This honor places her among a select group of 300 semi finalists named from over 6,000 nominees throughout the United States. The Broadcom MASTERS™, a program of Society for Science & the Public (SSP), is the premier competition for 6th, 7th and 8th graders where they demonstrate their mastery of Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering as Rising Starts through science fair competition.
